Towing Tank |
R&D Department in Shimonoseki has a world’s largest class 100m towing tank for trawl nets
and the world’s only flow test tank for seine and set nets.
With these unparalleled facilities, the Department conducts various scale model tests and researches to develop
optimum fishing gear and materials. Both new and existing nets and gear are tested to observe their physical
properties in multiple directions with an underwater camera system. |

Scale Model Test Tanks:
Trawl |
 |
A scale model of a trawl net complete with warps and trawl doors is towed in
a world’s
largest class towing tank (L:100m x W:5m x D:1.5m) to monitor its physical properties in multiple directions.
It is towed at different speeds to observe changes in its shape, opening height, distance between trawl doors,
and distance between wings.

 |
Scale Model Test Tanks: Purse Seine |
 |
A scale model of a seine net is tested in the world’s only flow test tank
(L:8m x W:4.5m x D:1.6m) to monitor its physical properties in the water.
It is monitored under various settings of parameters such as seining speed, pursing speed, and current speeds
at the upper, middle, and lower columns of the water.

Scale Model Test Tanks: Set Nets and Aquaculture Systems |
 |
A scale model of a set net or an aquaculture system is tested in the world’s
only flow test tank (L:8m x W:4.5m x D:1.6m) under various settings of water depths and other parameters to
observe changes
in its shape and rope tension. |
 |
Our towing tank is also used to test and evaluate towing properties of aquaculture
cages. |
