Quality control initiatives

Inspection training in progress

The Company’s Food Quality Management Department enhances the safety and trustworthiness of the food products it delivers to customers. The experts in the Food Quality Management Department work tirelessly on everything from checking specifications for new products to inspecting Group and partner plants and routinely checking product quality.

Environment management initiatives

In promoting sustainable management, the Company adopts ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to grasp the environmental impacts of business operations, and to identify and ensure compliance with requirements of environmental laws and regulations.
These are carried out once a year, and based on the confirmation results, the Company receives internal audits, management reviews, and external renewal inspections from certifying organizations. Through these, the Company conducts a PDCA cycle to discuss whether its environmental management is sufficient, as well as how to control environmental impacts going forward.
We aim to realize sustainable economic activities throughout the entire supply chain.

Our approach and efforts toward sourcing

The Company uses its raw material sourcing capacity to consistently manage its products—mainly pollack roe, spicy pollack roe, crab, frozen fish, and tuna—in all stages from raw material purchasing to processing at Group and partner plants before providing them to customers in many different lines of business to meet their needs.
The Company is also drawing interest not only for economic growth, but also for efforts to achieve SDGs and other initiatives to realize a sustainable society. With the responsibility of a company with a business foundation of more than 100 years in the marine products and fishing industries, Nichimo aims to establish sourcing systems that facilitate the conservation of fishery resources.

Communicating with business partners

Through its communication with business partners, Nichimo evaluates the products and services it provides in an effort to build trusting relationships and improve quality. We place great importance on communication, including exhibitions at a range of trade fairs, customer satisfaction surveys on our business partners, and other daily procurement activities and inquiries. We will continue working to respond to customers’ demands. Furthermore, we also ask our business partners to grasp the impact of their businesses on the environment and to ensure that they thoroughly observe relevant environmental laws and regulations, with the aim of achieving sustainable business activities throughout the supply chain.

Managing supply chains

Nichimo manages its supply chains using various certification systems.
MSC CoC certification is for supply chains used by MSC-certified companies in the fishing industry—which engage in sustainable fishing operations that are properly managed in terms of consideration for fishery resources and the environment—to reliably deliver their marine products to consumers. The Company has acquired this certification to gain the ability to apply the blue MSC label to its pollack roe, crab, and frozen fish. Additionally, MEL certification certifies that companies in the fishing and aquaculture industries are conserving resources and ecosystems so that these can be optimally used by generations into the future. In the Group, Nichimo Mariculture Co.,Ltd. and Nichimo have respectively acquired MEL certification for the production and distribution processing stages of coho salmon farmed in Miyagi Prefecture. Having acquired these processing and distribution CoC certifications, the Group provides marine products with established traceability and consideration for conserving fishery resources and ecosystems.

A net designed to collect rubble from the ocean

Cooperating with the Japanese government in the reconstruction of disaster-afflicted areas

The Japanese Fisheries Agency launched a project to rebuild fishing industry systems in East Japan after the extensive damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami disasters in 2011. As one of the companies participating in the project, Nichimo is involved in an endeavor to provide support for the reconstruction of the fishing industry, specifically by supplying fishing nets and all manner of fishing gear.
The Company also worked with the Miyagi prefectural government to develop special rubble-collecting nets, answering the earnest call for such nets to combat the persistent damage to fishing nets, bodily harm to fish, and other problems caused by the massive amount of rubble swept into the ocean during the 2011 disasters. Additionally, the Company collaborates with public agencies to provide fishing nets, gear, and guidance to foreign fishing companies, and makes other efforts to contribute to the development of fishing industries around the world. Most recently, the Company is channeling the efforts of the entire Group to help the marine products and fishing industries engage in processing, distribution, and sales of their own products.

Support for the Kainaniji Ikueikai

Support for the Kainaniji Ikueikai

The Kainaniji Ikueikai is a public interest incorporated foundation that exists to pay the school expenses and undertake other projects for the education of the bereaved children of fishing industry employees killed or missing as a result of marine accidents, with the aim of encouraging them to develop into contributing members of society in the future. Nichimo views the more than two decades of support it has provided to the foundation as fulfilling one of its responsibilities as a developer of the fishing and marine products industries which are its main business domains since its founding.

Supporting the Scrum Japan Program

The Japan Rugby Football Union launched this program with the aim of developing youth physically and mentally through rugby so that they will go on to enjoy success in many fields in the future. As a company promoting the realization of a sustainable society, Nichimo supports the program with the recognition that it is a worthy cause for society in that popularizing rugby can help develop children into the leaders of the future.
